We wish we had space to review everyone of these records in technical detail.
In a way, we have. We selected the finest companies to recommend their best
CDs in world music. We have gone to painstaking detail learning what makes
some world music good, and others bad. Producers like Peter Gabriel did the
very same thing before he signed bands to Real World. So, either way, you
are in safe hands. Hence, if this piece does indeed serve as an introduction
to the "soundtrack" of our ever-increasing global village, detailed reviews
of world music CDs will follow. Here are some ideas on sure-bets for exciting,
passionate world music.

Where Africa Meets The Orient : NOOR SHIMAAL
Egyptian Rai : HOSSAM RAMZY Hossam Ramzy could simply
be known as "The Man". He plays percussion like Eddie Van Halen plays the
guitar, and has moved beyond his home to play with Peter Gabriel and tour
in the Page/Plant reunion concerts. This album blends the best of dance music,
combining the sounds of Morocco, Lebanon, Egypt, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia.
It unifies the Arab world musically, a wonder that we all can only hope will
happen politically as well.
BEST OF CARNIVAL IN RIO (2 Cds)
Gipsy Flamenco Guitarras: : RAFA EL TACHUELA Hear this album
and most people will unfortunately say, "Gypsy Kings". It is unfortunate
because, nothing against the Gypsy Kings, but this style of gipsy famenco
guitar has been associated ONLY with the Gypsy Kings (usually by Yuppies
who think that by owning the Frampton Comes Alive of world music they
need to explore no more). Obtain Rafa el Tachuela and you will discover that,
while the Gypsy Kings are wonderful, they are only part of a rich heritage
that has many more CDs that can bring tempo and color into our lives.
The Art of the Chinese Dulcimer : PROFESSOR XU PINGXIN

CAROLINE
Nubian Magic : ALI HASSAN KUBAN
LATCHO DROM: Music for the film

Salif's soaring vocals with the best of classic and contemporary African
sounds."

Firin' In Fouta : BAABA MAAL "Capturing the
evolving spirit of Africian Music, featuring 'Sidiki'".
Fifa : ANGELIQUE KIDJO "One of Africa's most engaging
female stars. An artist that demands to be heard..."
SONY 550 MUSIC
Boheme: DEEP FOREST Sampling timeless tribal music with 90s
studio technology made superstars out of Michael Sanchez and Eric Mouguet.
Doing what comes naturally, they hit the right scene at the right era and
are enormously popular, still selling 2,000 copies per week of their first,
two year old, album. Boheme is an even larger success.
WINDHAM HILL, HIGH STREET RECORDS
Deseo : JON ANDERSON Of Deseo, Jon Anderson says,
"In the early years of Yes I was really interested in Indonesian music and
ancient music. And I had been lucky enough to spend time in Trinidad at Carnival
and I realized how powerful dancing music really can be."
The Deseo Remixes : JON ANDERSON (SOURCE MUSIC); FUTURE
SOUND OF LONDON; GLOBAL COMMUNICATION; TRANS-GLOBAL UNDERGROUND; DEEP
FORESTThe Deseo Remixes reinterprets Anderson's Latin-influenced album
by some of the most skillful remixers of today. Robert Duskis, High Street's
Director of A&R, says, "It's a fascinating concept to take [Jon Anderson's]
unique voice and put it into a completely new context. Yes was a band that
broke many musical boundaries in their day and has inspired many of this
new generation of musicians. I was careful to choose an eclectic bath of
innovators who I felt could bring their own musical imprint to the project."
Closer to Far Away : DOUGLAS SPOTTED EAGLE This
is not your father's Windham Hill. This album, which will arrive in stores
soon, is traditional Indian music mixed up-tempo with a beat that is almost
pop. Those who are tiring of American Indian music that is painfully slow
should buy this album.
