La Cueva Canyon EARTHSHIP
Glorieta, New Mexico
Welcome...... My name is Jim Pettyjohn and I built a house in northern New
Mexico and I would like to share it with you. Back in 1992, I bought 20 acres
outside Sante Fe in a little place called Glorieta, New Mexico. I have a
beautiful gentle south-sloping meadow surrounded by National Forest and Indian
Pueblo lands. With mountains all around, I have a wonderful view:
My friends, Peter Wilson and Sandra Odom, and I built an Earthship. An Earthship
is a concept for living space developed by
Mike Reynolds (Solar Survival
Architecture), an architect living in Taos, New Mexico. The house is
made of old car tires and cans and is bermed into the earth and is VERY friendly
to the environment. The cost is primarily for labor, so you can save alot
by doing the work yourself. We had to move over 1300 cubic yards of earth:
Notice the use of tires as retaining walls. The house is oriented toward
the south to capture the sun's rays allowing for the passive heating that
is characteristic of the Earthship. The house is kept warm in the winter
and cool in the summer. Notice there are only three rooms: a kitchen, main
room and a bedroom. The bathroom is located in the bedroom in the front under
the greenhouse. All total over 1750 sq. ft. held up by 736 sledge-hammered
, earth packed car tires. The roof is held up by these large pine logs called
Vegas. That is the kitchen on the right:
The glass rests on the short wall of tires in the front. The frame for the
glass makes for a lot of light:
Old cans are matrixed with concrete and used for the end walls and to capture
the bathroom from the alloted bedroom area .
All finished except for the clean up:
The main entrance, the kitchen:
Some early inside shots:
Later the garden grows:

Notice how the sun only enters a short way in the summer. Then look at the
garden........Jungle.
And last , the kitchen....................
Let me know what you think. I can share with you all I learned about the
process. And perhaps save you some time and money. For further information
