Welcome to the fifth issue of BWZ, the online Better World magazine!
For an introduction, please see the Introduction
to Better World.
We are now actively seeking sponsors and advertisers for BWZ; if you are interested, please let us know. In this issueThe building of a better world is a goal we all share. We may not always agree on the best ways to go about it, but inarguably there is work to be done--and the time is now. Although we face a myriad of environmental challenges, innovative solutions are being developed that show great promise. We lead off this issue with Christopher Flavin's in-depth look at the emerging paradigm of energy sources replacing the current age of polluting fossil fuels. Then we ask you to decide which of several new exciting environmental technologies we should make the subject of a comprehensive feature in an upcoming issue. In our Feature Stories section, staff writer Erich Schunter reports the latest information available about A-21 fuel, which its inventors claim is a possible replacement for gasoline. Robert Steuteville weighs in with a look at Earthships, a completely self-contained housing alternative. We explore one of the problems faced by the homeopathy movement, and introduce you to some of the herbal remedies that have been found effective for a myriad of our ailments. And Robert Frenay tells us how researchers are working on a new source of energy--the ocean. In the editorial section, Jon Entine and Martha Nichols remind us that claims of social responsiblity mean little if not backed by actions. David Atcheson fills us in on the impact still being felt today from the 1864 Northern Pacific Railroad land grant, and Sue LeBeau gives an idea for a project to acquaint children with the power of the sun by making their own solar box cookers. Get in touch! We hope you enjoy our new issue. If you do--and especially if you don't--please drop us a line about it. If you would like to join us by donating your information, time, or talent, please get in touch. Building a better world is a big tent; there's plenty of room for more.
