Cover Stories

Point:  Corporate Soul   by Jim Morrison

Today's businesses are investing in their greatest asset: their employees. In some boardrooms, terms such as "respect," "community," and "goodness" are heard more and more frequently alongside old business buzzwords like "efficiency," "quality," and "bottom line." The trend is inspired largely by the vision of Tom Chappell, president and co-founder of Tom's of Maine, as articulated in his seminal book, The Soul of a Business.

Counterpoint:  The Messy Reality of Socially Responsible Business   by Jon Entine

When Jon Entine first published "Shattered Image" in the September '94 Business Ethics magazine, it set off a firestorm of controversy that later became known as the "Body Shop Affair." Since then, Ben & Jerry's has taken some heat for Rainforest Crunch, and the socially responsible business movement has been talking about accountability. The true measure of success in being "socially responsible" must surely be in the trust of a company's customers, and that trust is earned through being accountable, open and truthful, and in having integrity. As the adage goes, the proof is in the pudding. Or was it in the ice cream?

As more consumers and corporations look for environmentally friendly papers, the paper market is changing. Prices are coming down, entrepeneurs are making paper from everything from trash to lawn clippings, and unbleached papers are all the rage. We discuss bleaching, look at some exciting alternative "tree-free" papers, and point you to some sources where you can find the perfect paper.
Paper Poisons
We fill you in on the details of how bleaching compounds used in the paper-making process affect the environment, and the health of humans and animals.
Portland's Legacy of Green
Portland's commitment to a green, livable future--for the mutual benefit of people and wildlife--offers inspiration and some useful lessons for other communities struggling with the problems that come hand-in-hand with fast population growth.
The Environmental Lessons of New England's Woods
Don't look now, but the trees have returned to New England. While we bicker over the future of Northwest forests, these woods tell an environmental success story.

Book Review: The Soul of a Business
The book that introduced the concept of "goodness" into the American corporate vocabulary, The Soul of a Business has been an inspiration to the socially responsible business movement, and to more than a few enterprises (including the publishers of Better World).
Music Review: Voice of the Homeless II - "I'll Be Home For Christmas"
Executive Producer Rex Neilson of MCA Records, after being struck by the vision of homeless people playing for spare change on the street, has put together a quality CD of Christmas music performed by the homeless, with proceeds going directly to the homeless. For a good cause, and worth a listen!
