Today's businesses are investing in their greatest asset: their employees.
In some boardrooms, terms such as "respect," "community," and "goodness"
are heard more and more frequently alongside old business buzzwords like
"efficiency," "quality," and "bottom line." The trend is inspired largely
by the vision of Tom Chappell, president and co-founder of Tom's of Maine,
as articulated in his seminal book, The
Soul of a Business.

When Jon Entine first published "Shattered Image" in the September '94
Business Ethics magazine, it set off a firestorm of controversy that
later became known as the "Body Shop Affair." Since then, Ben & Jerry's
has taken some heat for Rainforest Crunch, and the socially responsible business
movement has been talking about accountability. The true measure of success
in being "socially responsible" must surely be in the trust of a company's
customers, and that trust is earned through being accountable, open and truthful,
and in having integrity. As the adage goes, the proof is in the pudding.
Or was it in the ice cream?
